I am currently reading Blogging for Authors, by Barb Drozdowich. In her fantastic book, she coins the word “Canadianism”. Maybe I am so out of touch right now that I missed that label before but I like it! It has a catchy connotation!
There is a lot to be said about Canadianism.
Many people from other countries feel that Canadians don’t have a sense of self. While this may be true in some circumstances, many Canadians have identified with themselves and the multicultural, multilingual country we live in.
I live in Ontario where, although there is an underlying division between north and south, we are the province where the major Government resides and carries out the role of patriarch/matriarch as Prime Minister. Ontario is the Business end of the country; it is also one of the cultural hubs for welcoming Immigrants into our country.
Resentment and bitterness aside, we strive to reflect a politically correct ideal to other countries as well as our own people because, let’s face it, if citizens of this country can’t except the fact that we were all Immigrants at one stage of our ancestry then we do not fully appreciate what being Canadian really is.
